At Gold Coast Youth Service (GCYS) our vision is for young people on the Gold Coast to be valued, connected, hopeful about their future and supported to realise their full potential. As GCYS continues to grow we are committed to ensuring the quality of our work supports this vision.
GCYS actively pursues and invests in opportunities, capabilities and the aspirations of young people. To achieve our vision, we offer a continuum of support, spanning from early intervention, provision of immediate care, to transition-to-independence services, underpinned by an unwavering belief in young people’s potential through an Advantage Thinking Lens. This past year has seen us continue our collaboration with the Brotherhood of St. Laurence (BSL) and we are delighted to be launching our Advantage Thinking Practice Framework and Tool-kit promoting a purpose-driven, strengths-based culture.
To create lasting change, we recognise our role not only as a service provider, but as part of a broader ecosystem of services and sectors that impact young people’s lives. We have a shared responsibility to work alongside mainstream government departments, QPS, Safe Night Precincts and community partners to shift the conditions that lead to crisis. This means leveraging every point of system interaction as an opportunity to invest in a young person’s strengths, increase their access to opportunities, and support their long-term well-being and housing stability. Advantaged Thinking (AT) is our guide in this work and shifts the paradigm away from fixing problems toward building possibilities.
This Framework sets out how we work together at all levels of GCYS to create the best possible support for young people. It is built on our Three Pillars of Practice: Intention, Holistic Thinking and Presence. It gives us a clear and shared approach to our work. It helps us stay focused on strengths, be purposeful in what we do, and make sure our work leads to lasting change for young people and the systems around them.
The AT Framework sits alongside the AT Tool-kit. While the Framework gives us the big picture, the Tool-kit offers practical tools to help bring it to life. It includes resources for planning, self-refl ection, involving young people, and sharing stories. We know we’re working in complex environments, and young people often face complex challenges too. This Framework helps us stay grounded. It encourages us all to be curious, hopeful, and brave in how we respond.
The Management Committee is very proud of the work of our dedicated and passionate GCYS staff in supporting local young people. The new AT Framework and Tool-kit work to ensure that our dedication and passion are guided by the quality of this positive foundational way of working which will continue to drive our teams’ success in supporting young people into the future.
The Management Committee’s governance role in steering the strategic direction of GCYS is a signifi cant responsibility. I continue to be grateful for the commitment & collaborative approach between Committee Members in overseeing our Strategic Planning processes. The Committee continues to appreciate the strength and stability of our staffi ng leadership structure that has helped us embed our supervision and support mechanisms. It is an exciting time to be launching our AT Practice Framework and Tool-kit to help guide individuals, programs and the whole of GCYS.
